George Stroud, a crime magazine's crusading editor, has to postpone a vacation with his wife - again - when a glamorous blonde is murdered and he is assigned by his publishing boss to find the killer. As the investigation proceeds to its conclusion, Stroud must try to disrupt his ordinarily brilliant investigative team as they increasingly build evidence that he is the killer.

While not mentioned as often as films like Double Indemnity, The Big Sleep, or Kiss Me Deadly, this work from the "classic period" of film noir can hold its own. Fluidly shot by director John Farrow, it is always interesting and often funny as well. A fine cast, led by Ray Milland helps. As is often the case though, Charles Laughton steals the show as the bad guy. Anyone interested in film noir shouldn't miss this clever and entertaining flick.

an intense thriller with ray milland and charles laughton that was remade in the 80's as the kevin costner vehicle called no way out. this is better of course. some of the dialogue is line for line

This just did not keep me captivated. However the beginning sequence and the acting are nice.

This is a quality film noir that keeps you gripped with its many interesting scenes. Knowing that our man is on the run at the start, we watch the events unfold that lead him to this situation, and we don't know how he's gonna get himself out of it.

Film noir was just made for black and white with lots of dark shadows and lugubrious settings which perfectly suit this film set in a New York publishing empire. If you've seen the remake - No Way Out - you'll know the gist of the story: A man has to investigate a murder in which he has been set up to take the fall in order to cover up the evil malfeasance of others. Taut dialogue, a claustrophobic setting and well-paced suspense make this an absolute classic.
