This is obviously a decent script mangled by a very bad production.

What hurts The Beat Generation more than anything else is Charles Haas' failure to maintain a consistent directorial tone.

This story of Mamie Van Doren and a detective's hunt for a sex maniac has little to do with Kerouac and Ginsberg, but everything to do with campy exploitation. It's a terrible movie, but it's entertaining if you're in the mood for some camp. You also get Robert Mitchums son James , pin-up queen Irish McCalla, Vampira as a beat poet , and character actor William Schallert in an uncredited role.

Good for a saucy laugh. Filled with rape, murder, babies, blonde bomb shells, homosexuals, cops, beatniks, Louie Armstrong and scuba fight scenes. How can you not enjoy this?
