Great flim about Hollywood in the 40s & 50s carried by Kirk Douglas' larger than life character and performance; fascinating look at the relationships between studio heads/producers, directors, writers, and star actors - relationships that most often start off as professional before lines get blurred and things get personal and messy...

An entertaining perspective on behind the scenes Hollywood, surprisingly made within the studio system. Told in the form of three flashbacks by a writer, director and actress who were used and betrayed by producer Jonathan Shields, but in turn achieved great successes while he remains a failure, addicted to the high of a new project. Surprisingly unsentimental and dirt-digging, it's a fantastic example of Hollywood on Hollywood capturing both the collaborative highs and selfish, deceitful lows. The one thing missing was Shield's own perspective - a fourth flashback focusing on him may have been very effective. As it is, only one sad, angry scene between Douglas and Turner when he betrays her gives a true flash of the conflicted tormented character.

The best non-musical film of Vincente Minnellis career with a brilliant cast. Neither Lana Turner nor Kirk Douglas were ever better, but it was the always wonderful Gloria Grahame, who won an Oscar. Masterfully scriptet and produced, this one you do not want to miss.

De las mejores peliculas de Vincente Minelli y una de las mejores peliculas de Hollywood acerca de ellos mismos, extraordinaria la actuacion principal de Kirk Douglas

One of the ultimate "Hollywood" films. Kirk Douglas is wonderful. His equally loveable and hateable.
