The Art of War (2000)

Neil Shaw is both agent and weapon - a critical line of defense for the Secretary General of the United Nations. He does not even officially exist. As an international security expert, he must uncover an international plot in which ruthless terrorists threatened to bring down the United Nations on the eve of an historic summit with China. A mysterious chain of events leads to the murder of the Chinese U.N. Ambassador, and the terrorists frame Neil Shaw, the one man they believe can stop them. Accused of the crime, Shaw goes underground — in effect, vanishing from his own life — as he tries to stop what could become World War III.

Gun battles, explosions, car chases, running races ad infinitum. Also lots of breaking glass. All this punctuated by thunderous music and sometimes thunder itself.

Probably one of the few cool action movies where I still don't really know what was going on, even after seeing it about three times. The actress is tres, tres cute, too.

I generally steer clear of "set up and betrayed, now everything is pinned on this one guy and he has to blah blah blah" plots. Like the fifteen that were released in just the past two years. But around that in this movie is a ton of fantastic action. A few martial arts fights, a few chases, a high-speed car escape... And it all comes complete with the classic action movie "Main character infiltrates a party, makes himself looks better than everyone, then makes a sweet escape" opener. I particularly liked the way he ran the same on-foot chase twice, though the twist revealed during the second one was really obvious all the way back during the first one. In all, the plot was fairly decent, nothing special. But this is definitely the kind of action I like in my movies. Major points for that.

The action is entertaining enough, but working out who is shafting whom in the rather confused plot is another matter.
