I can't praise this film enough. An invigorating, inventive and deeply affecting docudrama. What could have been a dated mess of lip-synching and 'play for today' rehashes in fact feels fresh and urgent whilst retaining it's 'britishness' and a respect for our filmmaking heritage. A biography that transcends it's circumstance and speaks for people in poverty and crisis. I have to add, the use of verbatim performance and reenactments staged in their original location, pushes and eclipses the need for fact and fiction boundaries. It is this coalescent quality of documentary film that can access truths unavailable to separate fact or fiction accounts. Vital.

Sort of documentary with lip-syncing actors over real voices, scenes played out on a council estate and news clips about the life and times of Andrea Dunbar, a "genius from the slums" and author of THE ARBOR and RITA,SUE & BOB TOO. She wrote her first play, which was performed at the Royal Court Theatre London, when she was just 15, and she died at 29 in the local pub, leaving three kids from three diferent dads to grow up as best they can (and in one case, not very well at all). Absolutely rivetting, especially if you don't know the story. Very recommended.

A masterpiece in form and content. This is a film that has restructured what a documentary can be, and not just to be envelope pushing, but because it makes sense in relation to the subject. And, my, what a subject. This is heartbreaking, depressing stuff, but so wry. And beautiful. An unbelievable film.

The format suggests such films as "Synechdoche, New York" or "American Splendor," but Barnard has gone beyond them, also instilling a theatrical element befitting her subject.
