Barnard's boldest move is to unveil the irresponsible chaos of the playwright's private life, and to make us wonder if the art was worth the suffering, after all.

Fascinating piece of Artangel film-making, A documentary where interviews are played out by actors, to reveal the life of Andrea Dunbar and her children, through testimonials and reference to the plays she wrote. Harrowing stories of 80s and 90s Northern life, and the breakdown of family, communities and meaning... lost its way a little towards the end, but managed to pull off a reasonably hopeful ending.

Ms. Barnard illustrates in heartbreaking fashion how the cycle of familial neglect, low self-esteem and self destruction completely ruined lives that were once so full of promise.

It's an appalling indictment of family dysfunction but there are shards of optimism, particularly the noble actions of the self-sacrificing couple who acted as foster parents for the adolescent Lorraine.

Andrea Dunbar's portrait here is unforgiving; comparable to Joan Crawford in "Mommy Dearest" or Tobias Wolff's brass-knuckled dad in "This Boy's Life."
