After the death of his son, travel writer Macon Leary seems to be sleep walking through life. Macon's wife is having similar problems. They separate, and Macon meets a strange, outgoing woman who brings him 'back down to earth', but his wife soon thinks their marriage is still worth another try.

I love this film. Great performance from Geena Davis and I loved her clothes. The Leary family were really entertaining with William Hurt's character being the closest to "normal" - whatever that is! Must admit I found Kathleen Turner as Sarah quite annoying, she really did not know when to stop picking away. Pleased Macon saw sense and chose Muriel in the end.

Not a great movie but it manages to change tones with ease. You're dealing with a man losing his son, his wife leaving him and he's dealing with his own issues as a very private, depressed man. But there is alot of laughs in here. The fact that i still cared about Hurt's character and wanted him to be happy is a testament to his performance.

From a book by one of my favourite writers, starring two of my favourite actors, Williams Hurt and Geena Davis. It's quite faithful to the book and I regularly dip into this magic!

Hurt's character is so inert and unemotional that some spectators may find it difficult to stay interested in him.
