Tequila Sunrise (1988)

In a seaside California town, best friends Mac and Nick are on opposite sides of the law. Mac is a former drug dealer trying to clean up his act, while Nick is a high-profile detective trying to take down a Mexican drug lord named Carlos. Soon Nick's loyalties are put to the test when he begins an affair with restaurateur Jo Ann -- a love interest of Mac's -- unwittingly leading his friend into a police-orchestrated trap.

I loved this movie because it featured three of my favorite actors. Mel Gibson played a likable criminal and Kurt Russell a cop who isn't such a good guy. Michelle Pfeiffer is the woman they both try to romance. Raul Julia had a good cameo, too.

It features a wonderful cast, strong performances (including two excellent smaller roles for the late Raul Julia and J.T. Walsh, both of whom died way too young) and fantastic writing. The scenery seems dated today, but cinematography work was a masterpiece for 1988. Think "Out of Sight" but few years earlier. Dialogue is memorable as is sexy Michelle Pfeiffer. While plot is fairly simple, character development is thorough and characters themselves, believable. Overall, it's a great film.

Interesting story that should have been a much better movie. Towne is a great writer, but mediocre when it comes to directing (at best.) Great cast, though. Raul Julia is amazing, as always.

Much better than I remember. Great four leads elevate the so-so thriller plot. Not Towne's finest moment, but certainly his best as director.

The one thing I can say about this movie, is that it could have been much better. Their were many problems which needed to be addressed. First of all, their is too much going on in this film for the script to handle. Their is a bunch of romance, a guy on the run, and above all else, a friendship. In any other movie this would have worked out, but for some reason with tequilla sunrise it just wasn't very good. Many of the sequences in this movie are very dull. There were times where I just wanted to shut off the film because it was so boring. Their really wasn't anything really good about this movie, but it wasn't HORRIBLE. Kurt Russell and Mel Gibson always do a good job with their rolls, and Michelle Pfeeiffer was pretty much eye candy the entire film. Overall, I would never ever ever see this movie again. It was pretty boring, the acting was so so, and it had too much going on at once. Very disappointing.
