Tentacles (1977)

Several people disappear from and at the sea. Their bodies are found gnawed to the skeleton, even the marrow is missing. The scientists have no idea which animal could do such things. Dr. Turner begins to suspect that the company which builds a tunnel beneath the bay might have poisoned the environment and caused an octopus to mutate to giant dimensions...

'Tentacoli' er en italiensk B-film og en af mange billige efterligninger af Spielberg's mesterlige 'Jaws'. Her er hajen bare skiftet ud med en blaeksprutte og saa er det lykkes at faa lokket et par kendte amerikanske navne med paa rollelisten, for at saelge skidtet. Og skidt det er det! Filmen er totalt blottet for alt der goer en god film, ja selv et par ufrivillige komiske monsterscener finder man desvaerre ikke.

A surprisingly impressive cast is wasted in this cheesy, low-budget Italian rip-off of 'Jaws'. There's a handful of memorable set-pieces and some hokey special effects, but not enough to make this ridiculous dud entertaining. Pretty awesome score by Stelvio Cipriani, though.

This movie is fascinating and obnoxious, but mostly just terrible. It starts off pretty well as just a generic animals attack movie that blatantly rips off Jaws. There were plenty of them at the time and this had some promise. Midway through though, the movie starts to become blatantly Italian schlock with some annoying music looped over and over while characters are muted and the editor seems to be messing around on purpose cutting to unnecessary freeze frames, long drawn out shots that aren't even in focus, and even a shot of a woman picking her nose that was not played for laughs, but probably something that came upon in the footage. This movie is like a bad joke where the filmmakers gave up halfway through. It's amazing that the cast share between them six Oscars. I would never give this movie a recommendation, but it had me laughing at time with the bizarre edits and use of miniature models. It even has a whale vs. octopus fight done by ramming a toy killer whale multiple times into a live octopus. It's both cruel and hilarious.

in what is clearly a rip-off of Jaws (and what movie wasn't after it's release), Tentacles manages to show just what bad editing, sound and direction really are. That being said, the film isn't a terrible watch... it's mostly just boring. Clearly the budget was spent on all the neat diving gadgets and aparatus instead f the monster and yet I'm not sure that this was the right choice to make. With but a few gore FX and relying a good deal on "squid ink|", Tentacles manages to bore and puzzle on new levels.

In the post-Jaws era of horror films, Tentacles is not bad but also not good as this Italian made production. Here, you have three acting legends John Huston, Henry Fonda and Shelley Winters. It's great to see them working together on a film, but you wish they were in another film instead of slumming here. This time instead of a great white you have a great, giant octopus that is causing havoc in this seaside town. What starts off as a promising opening where the octopus take a child in a carriage and others to their deaths, becomes silly towards the middle and increasingly hokey at the end. 70's horror vet Bo Hopkins is on hand as a marine biologist out for revenge and Huston and Winters play husband and wife and they have a young son, not grandson to watch over but son. Stretching credibility much further is Hopkins giving an empassionate speech to two killer whales! But the part that caused me so laugh so hard is Shelley Winters and a ridiculous hat she wears. Oh how I miss 70's cinema.
