When Lonnie Franklin Jr. was arrested in South Central Los Angeles in 2010 as the suspected murderer of a string of young black women, police hailed it as the culmination of 20 years of investigations. Four years later documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield took his camera to the alleged killer's neighborhood for another view.

Stunning documentary, in which Broomfield plops down in the middle of South-Central, starts talking to people and in the course of making the film does a far greater job of investigation than the LAPD or LA Sheriffs did over nearly 30 years. A damning indictment of LA law enforcement and one of the finest documentaries ever produced. Absolute must-see.

It's not as slick or as smooth as other crime docs, but #thegrimsleeper is a strong film that shines light on life in inner city, south LA.

If there are any heroic figures in this sad tale, it’s the women of Black Coalition Fighting Back Serial Murders, a grassroots activists organization that took notice of the killings back in the ‘80s and spent decades trying to bring official and media attention to them.
