I am not sure what to make of Maddin's first feature film. It's odd even by his own standards. There is a lot of imagination on display here but I am not sure it adds up to much beyond a succession of enjoyably weird images and ideas.

The filmmaker self-consciously borrows from dozens of sources, including radio dramas, Our Gang shorts, hygiene films, school plays, stag pictures, Universal horror, ethnographic documentaries, and the indie weirdness of John Waters and David Lynch.

My favourtie film by my favourite Canadian director.

This could have been a magical cult classic, yet it turned out so awkward. The acting was so atrocious and false that I had to stop the film within ten minutes. Actually, I don't know why, but every Canadian film I've seen so far had the same stumbling awkwardness to it. The imagery is really beautiful at times, but it feels like painted plastic, and the acting makes it unbearable. It falls apart. Pretty cardboard surface that literally, PAINFULLY reeks of lack of depth. The whole afair is skin-deep, barren, soulless pantomime which completely kills any magic the film could have had.

Picked this one up from the local library. Thought it was great, the feel, the set, even the awkward acting made it fit all together...
