Guy Maddin's first film is a bizarre trip to a hospital I hope I never find myself in.

I am not sure what to make of Maddin's first feature film. It's odd even by his own standards. There is a lot of imagination on display here but I am not sure it adds up to much beyond a succession of enjoyably weird images and ideas.

Surprisingly I found Guy Maddins debut movie quite funny. I wouldn't call it interesting because it fails to imvolve me both psychologically and emotionally but nonetheless it is funny as hell. I could not help to laugh my ass off during many of the scenes. It has a wonderful playfulness to its multi layered storyline and the Icelandic univers is inventive and bizarre. You can really sense the passion behind this production. So despite its flaws I am now looking forward to more from Maddin.

the most eerie, unplaceable movie that defies any categorisation. gimli makes you question all the ritual banalities of perception, speech, logic that help men see themsleves as sane and the world as an ordered universe.this movie makes your skin cold, displaces your heart and turns you into stone.

Wow, what a film. I saw it cause Guy painted my old wooden house in Winnepeg while he was still a house painter and we got chatting and he told me about a film he had made. Later, I read that it played in New York for a year... I can believe that... cause there aren't too many things that can keep my attention like the black face bits or those young nurses walking in and out of the room, and especially the Icelandic story telling and fish carving and the naive love story between the heavy fellow and his girl. Wow.
