Although the dialogue and plot maybe a bit sparse for some I found the themes explored in this story extremely heavy and meaningful. The acting was decent but the real star of this film was the Australian outback which was shot and portrayed majestically. I also appreciated the seamless use of flashbacks to help us better understand these characters while keeping me fully engaged as well. Debated on a 3.5* but I think this gets to 4* for me, for the reasons stated above.

It is, on any analysis, a simple story that is elevated by the way it is told...Although I can't say the film carried me away, I appreciate the sincerity and dedication of the filmmaking team

This is a slice of Australian history that an indigenous director such as Thornton is best equipped to depict; only by confronting the racism of a bygone period can we hope to understand why racism is still so prevalent in this "sweet country."

It's deliberately paced yet rewards patience, building to a resolution that's both harrowing and heartbreaking.

I enjoyed this movie, which paints a credible picture of life at the Australian frontier, which is unfamiliar to me. Some of the things it shows are the loneliness, abuse, alcoholism, and racism of the settlers and disparity between indigenous people that work for the white settlers and who have lost their heritage as opposed to the tribal people who live in a different world.
