Suzanne's youthful lightness and hope is constantly crushed by events, and her attraction to the wrong men.

Une histoire difficile. Racontée simplement. Ce n'est jamais du très grand cinéma, mais on se laisse porter. On se laisse raconter... Et la force, la véritable, d'un film comme celui-ci, aussi simple soit-il, c'est de s'en rappeler longtemps après le visionnement.

Suzanne fait des mauvais choix et les malheurs s'accumulent avec une constance exemplaire. Quillevere ne retient que les tuiles pour etablir la durete de son cinema social (la passion est toujours ephemere et amere), on aurait aime qu'elle creuse plus les liens entre ses protagonistes...

Following on from 'What Maisie Knew' we watched this, another tale of a small child neglected by its parents. The focus is on the mother here, though, and her father, a truck driver. Unusual in that this is a slice of French working-class life, told in a way that doesn't condescend. It's a powerful tale of a crazy girl who is carried away by her passion, and is redeemed by her father's love, and her own love of her sister.

The film starts of a bit choppy as the transitions between the years are sudden and confusing. This settles down as the story begins to flow and Suzanne's life altering mistakes take hold.
