Brothers (2004)

A Danish officer, Michael, is sent away to the International Security Assistance Force operation in Afghanistan for three months. His first mission there is to find a young radar technician who had been separated from his squad some days earlier. While on the search, his helicopter is shot down and he is taken as a prisoner of war, but is reported dead to the family.

Danish film about two brothers and the tale of how one goes missing in Afgahanistan and the other tries to comfort his grieving wife and daughters. This was later remade in Hollywood but the Danish version is much more stripped down with hand held shots and minimal set design/costuming clearly visible. A more real-life look at the horrible situation even though the American version is also quite touching.

Well positioned on that slippery cliff called melodrama, Susanne Bier's grainy, intimate, almost claustrophobic family drama, Brothers, keeps its footing, never falling into the deep chasm of Soap Opera.
