One of the better late '70s horror TV movies. Based on the book "Summer of Fear" by Lois Duncan (the author of "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Stranger With My Face" among other essential reads for budding horror fans), and the first "mainstream" project for Wes Craven, who previously directed "The Last House on the Left" and "The Hills Have Eyes." But the most important part of the equation is Linda Blair. By 1978, Linda had gotten mixed up in a drug deal and that, combined with the spectacular failure of "Exorcist II: The Heretic" the year prior, meant that she was already headed into the "hasbeen" files. The next year would bring the horrifying non-horror film "Roller Boogie" and a long string of dreadful B-movies for a long time. So in this stop gap between two of the worst movies ever made, Blair gives a fine performance in a somewhat-forgotten bit of scariness that still holds up pretty well. (I have no idea what's up with the DVD cover though.)

This is an overlooked Craven movie. It's pretty damn good actually. It's one of those horror movies that doesn't show any real violence, but instead focuses on the psychical aspects. And it treats these psychical with a lot of tension and akward scenes. Lee Purcell (playing a strange cusine) practically steals Linda Blair's identity. Linda Blair's mission is to show her closest that Lee Purcell is an evil witch, but with everyone (including her own family) finding Purcell to be a sweetheard this gets diffelcult. The movie is packed with erotic undetones with some of them being more obscure than others. This movie is watchable!

Before there was "The Craft" there was The Crap. Early TV-movie horror directed by Wes Craven [before he came to his senses and created Freddy Krueger] and based on a novel by Lois Duncan ("I Know What You Did Last Summer"). The film stars Linda Blair of "The Exorcist." Filled with cheesy plot devices and characters right out of "Scooby Doo" [Look for the old guy neighbor who HAPPENS to be an expert on the occult], a dunderhead of a script and one of the greatest (worst) late 70s catfights ever filmed... seriously, there's big hair everywhere. It's like watching Muppets wrestle. Why remake good movies when this is still collecting dust somewhere?

There is some small enjoyment, besides that found in wasting a few minutes with television history, in the silly, pulpy quality of the proceedings.
