Weepy and melodramatic? No doubt. Over the top? Dangerously close, but hey it was 1937. What really matters in this classic is the performance from Barbara Stanwyck, all vitality and grace. One of her best screen efforts.

the irony this movie delivers.coming from relative wealth myself i didnt comprehend barbara stanwyck s plight.i think the lesson learned here is that sometimes being poor you are personally happy, and being richer makes you unhappy with a sense of not fitting in.decisions of needs do they out weigh the wants?however tour de force movie check this 1 out.

The tear-jerkingest tearjerker I have ever seen. Barbara Stanwyck is stunning and her Stella is one remarkable character. She both gets it and doesn't at all and that combination is just so poignant by the end of the film.

After a creaky start, this grows into a devastating movie with an unmatched ability to reduce grown men and women to sobbing heaps.

Definitely an example of how post-code Hollywood films promoted an unjust vision of motherhood. It made me cry, but the tears were for the injustice of it all.
