A radical masterpiece about the dangers of idolatry in marriage, and how the pressures of a conformist society can destroy an individual. Decades of critics have missed the real point, distracted by excellent performances and direction.

King Vidor's tasteful direction and Stanwyck's heartbreaking performance as the self-sacrificing mother are responsible for the emotional power of this melodrama, recently evaluated and elevated by both feminist and auteurist critics.

A film very ahead of it's time...a revolutionary portrayal of women with so much honesty and rawness. Most of the way through Barbara Stanwyck delivered a sensational performance and in many scenes pulled off an emotional level quite high for an actress in the 30's. Many people could label this film as feminist and one sided...I don't believe that at all...at it's heart it is a film about a free spirited mother who is damaged trying to be the best mother possible. The real let down in this film is the script...it wasn't very well structured at all..key information was never divulged and some scenes we just to rushed. All in all extraordinary film on a compelling woman... a film ahead of it's time but dated by today's standards.

I really enjoyed this! Mainly the main character Stella- played brilliantly by Barbara Stanwyck (who rightfuly earned an Oscar nomination for this, and although I haven't seen the other nominees, or even heard of them, she should have won- it was the "I am not getting a divorce and you tell my husband to just keep signing the cheques!!!" scene that got me). She was great! Most of it was, the sets, the costumes, the music, the story, the other actors (including the daughter who also received an Oscar nod). All in all a well done piece!
