Starred Up (2014)

19-year-old Eric, arrogant and ultra-violent, is prematurely transferred to the same adult prison facility as his estranged father. As his explosive temper quickly finds him enemies in both prison authorities and fellow inmates — and his already volatile relationship with his father is pushed past breaking point — Eric is approached by a volunteer psychotherapist, who runs an anger management group for prisoners. Torn between gang politics, prison corruption, and a glimmer of something better, Eric finds himself in a fight for his own life, unsure if his own father is there to protect him or join in punishing him.

A quality prison flick. O' Connell is one hard bastard and makes Carlin from Scum look like one of Schillingers prags in Oz. As always, Ben Mendelsohn is excellent as is Rupert Friend as the Prison therapist. A must see.

I watched this with an open mind, and wasn't expecting much. It made it all the more interesting to watch. there is not a bad performance in this: best British film I've seen in a while.

Very good movie, too bad it didn't have subtitles even on the dvd version because I couldn't understand half of the movie

Starred Up is a grand prison movie that I couldn't really keep my eyes from. Jack O' Connell is fantastic in this, and the rest of the actors did a great job too. The screenwriter was a therapist in the prison that councils guilty people, and it really shows how realistic it is while writing a really great father/son relationship. The movie is short which I felt more satisfied consider that I think prison films would overstay their welcome if they made it long. The characters are good and sympathetic, it's unpredictable, and there's no soundtrack, until the end that is, which was fitting to a prison movie. Starred Up is the best prison movie I seen so far and in my opinion, better than Midnight Express.

Starred Up is one of if not THE film of the year. I got into seeing it merely by accident, but what a wonderful accident it was. Jack O'Connell stands out as a class A actor, and is supported by a myriad of professionals that elevate themselves as much as they elevate him. It may have its grounds on a very old story between estranged father and son, but it does in a very hard-hitting and satisfying way. I can not stress enough how good of a movie this is. Do not let it slip on your movies-to-watch list.
