19-year-old Eric, arrogant and ultra-violent, is prematurely transferred to the same adult prison facility as his estranged father. As his explosive temper quickly finds him enemies in both prison authorities and fellow inmates — and his already volatile relationship with his father is pushed past breaking point — Eric is approached by a volunteer psychotherapist, who runs an anger management group for prisoners. Torn between gang politics, prison corruption, and a glimmer of something better, Eric finds himself in a fight for his own life, unsure if his own father is there to protect him or join in punishing him.

Excellent movie! Highly recommended! 10/10

This is a surprisingly powerful prison drama that manages to rise above the generally expected level for this type of genre film. Due to an excellent screenplay which balances grit with humour it is gripping from beginning to end. Relative newcomer Jack O'Connell in a star making performance (Angelina Jolie obviously took note) holds centre stage with ease as the junior offender who is 'Starred Up' and finds himself transferred to an adult prison where he is unwittingly re-united with his dad. As the estranged and neglectful father Ben Mendelsohn demonstrates, yet again, what a great character actor he is (He all but stole 'Killing me Softly'). The film is very intense and one scene of violence is so shocking that it had me literally holding my breath! Technically I found the sound to be inaudible at times which, unfortunately, causes some of the humour to be lost. Never the less this is first rate stuff demonstrating cinema at its provocative best.

Starred Up is a strikingly realistic and smart prison drama. Jack O' Connell gives an award worthy performance and shows tremendous skill, with a supporting cast that is equally as impressive. The narrative is masterfully crafted with lots of twists throughout, but it's the way the characters are handled and written that make the narrative standout. While the cinematography isn't overly artistic it gives the film a sense of rawness and helps the film seem more realistic.

Not my usual film but this was outstanding, a great portrayal of how I believe most of us see prison.

One word, KNOCK OUT! Unbelievably real, shocking, intense and fantastic UK prison drama! Maybe my second favorite prison movie, No.1 is of course, MIDNIGHT EXPRESS! Father Neville meets his son Eric in prison. Neville tries to save Eric in the dangerous place. But Eric never listens and they fight always. But Neville really loves Eric deeply from bottom of his heart... Jack O'Connell was unbelievably fantastic! His performance was just superb, dangerous and excellent! He got British Academy Awards nomination! I think he'll be a big star! Director David MacKenzie made a great movie! Climax was so wonderful! Only British people can make a smart movie like this! Oh Blu-ray's HD picture quality was fantastic too! Yes, I had an excellent time! Thanks!
