Standing in the Shadows of Motown (2002)

In 1959, Berry Gordy Jr. gathered the best musicians from Detroit's thriving jazz and blues scene to begin cutting songs for his new record company. Over a fourteen year period they were the heartbeat on every hit from Motown's Detroit era. By the end of their phenomenal run, this unheralded group of musicians had played on more number ones hits than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis and the Beatles combined - which makes them the greatest hit machine in the history of popular music. They called themselves the Funk Brothers. Forty-one years after they played their first note on a Motown record and three decades since they were all together, the Funk Brothers reunited back in Detroit to play their music and tell their unforgettable story, with the help of archival footage, still photos, narration, interviews, re-creation scenes, 20 Motown master tracks, and twelve new live performances of Motown classics with the Brothers backing up contemporary performers.

This is a film about a group of studio musicians called The Funk Brothers, who played on the Motown recordings from the late 50's until the early 70's and how they were the sound behind more #1. Hits than Elvis, The Beatles, The Beach Boys & The Rolling Stones combined. As Motown gained in popularity, making star after star with Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye etc... these great musicians were virtually forgotten, the contribution they have made gone unacknowledged. They were the sound of Motown, they are The Funk Brothers.

Fanatastic Documentary which finally gives full due to the forgotten men who made the Motown sound what it was The Funk Brothers . Includes some trade Motown secrets and Performances from Chaka Khan and Ben Haper. The most amazing parts of the film is that it never patronises these great guys and they give an Honest Account of how Motown worked Up until the company moved in 1971. Whats also amazing is that some 40 years down the line they still know how to cut it . If you dont like Motown then there must be a huge chasm in your life and this film more than fills that chasm ,great stuff

Brilliant & moving documentary of a the legendary and much underappreciated original motown studio musicians. A must watch for anyone who loves jazz/soul/blues music.. and for any musician!
