Springfield Rifle (1952)

Major Lex Kearney, dishonourably discharged from the army for cowardice in battle, volunteers to go undercover to try to prevent raids against shipments of horses desperately needed for the Union war effort. Falling in with the gang of jayhawkers and Confederate soldiers who have been conducting the raids, he gradually gains their trust and is put in a position where he can discover who has been giving them secret information revealing the routes of the horse shipments.

gary cooper stars in what was his 3rd western in a row, Visually fine Western, that is as much a crime drama or spy film as a Western.

A different kind of western. A little spotty on the plot though. Beautiful scenery.

Pretty good spy western. Of course Gary Cooper is good in just about anything he does.

This is my first encounter with a western espionage movie and who better to play the spy than gary cooper. Not a great film by any means, a merely entertaining one. Cooper plays a disgraced northern soldier who really is just going undercover to find out who is jeopardizing the northen efforts.

Excellent western from the underrated DeToth. Cooper is at the center of a complex Civil War era espionage plot. The film flies through twists and turns with double cross after double cross. Cooper is his usual understated self, which works perfectly for the film. DeToth does everything economically and efficiently. Great 50s western.
