Spider Baby (1967)

In a dilapidated rural mansion, the last generation of the degenerate, inbred Merrye family lives with the inherited curse of a disease that causes them to mentally regress from the age of 10 or so on as they physically develop. The family chauffeur looks out for them and covers up their indiscretions. Trouble comes when greedy distant relatives and their lawyer arrive to dispossess the family of its home.

It is sad that Jack Hill made a more atmospheric, scarier horror movie on what looks like a budget of $10 than filmmakers can create now with millions and access to CGI. Comic and creepy. "I'll be back, bug!"

Exploitation maestro, Jack Hill introduces his spectator to a horror-family far more dangerous and deranged than the Addams Family. Instead of witty quips regarding pain and a love of scary things, the family in Spider Baby kills, slashes, consumes, and digests a slew of victims. For the most part, Spider Baby lays the foundation for laughter instead of trying to inspire queasiness via excessive gore. However, the pacing and cinematography create a creepy atmosphere that doesn't let you forget that the film's true genre is horror.

The last film of Mantan Moreland,a true screen legend. Fantastic acting all around. Lon Chaney Jr. was highly underrated.
