Modern farms are struggling to keep a secret. Most of the animals used for food in the United States are raised in giant, bizarre factories, hidden deep in remote areas of the countryside. Speciesism: The Movie director Mark Devries set out to investigate. The documentary takes viewers on a sometimes funny, sometimes frightening adventure, crawling through the bushes that hide these factories, flying in airplanes above their toxic manure lagoons, and coming face-to-face with their owners.

This terrific documentary tells the truth about animal agriculture, specifically factory farming, and the speciesism which allows humans to see sentient beings as mere commodities. Devries ingenuous demeanor and desire to truly investigate and learn from his investigations, make this a winning film. I highly recommend this film to anyone who cares about making informed ethical choices.

Well-crafted documentary created by a guy who was genuinely curious to learn more about where our food comes from and explore the ethics of eating it. No matter your current viewpoints or knowledge on the food industry in America or elsewhere, this film will open your eyes to numerous viewpoints from authorities on the industry and food ethics, as well as the farmers who produce what we eat and those who live in surrounding communities. Speciesism is an honest exploration of production processes, coming closer to the choices we make in the grocery aisle, and becoming educated on how they affect our future. Highly recommended.

An excellent look at the way we see animals and why we should perhaps reconsider our views. The part that looked at pollution in North Carolina from factory hog farms was especially eye-opening.
