South Solitary is perfect for those who prize art for its own sake and a perfect example of why the rest of Australia is afraid of Australian films.

Meredith has a bath. Meredith milks a cow. Meredith chases a sheep. These scenes left me shaking my head with disbelief. Who could possibly find this interesting?

Never ceases to surprise me that different people like different things - I can't believe that there is not universal approval of this film and yet audience rating here is 25%. South Solitary is a beautifully crafted study; broken people fixing each other. The script is tight almost clipped, acting wonderfully underplayed, photography perfect - considering their idea of foreplay, its amazing to think something so sensitive and beautiful could have come from Oz.

Miranda Otto performs well in the attempt to act her way out from under some painfully pedestrian writing. Other than her romantic interest, no-one else seems to be trying. A few forced laughs, but when they do the toilet-in-a-hurricane gag, the film has already gone on too long.
