William Franklin is a teacher who was born in Ireland and moved to the United States only to repatriate in 1939 after his leftist political views cause him to lose his job. Franklin becomes the first non-cleric instructor at St. Jude's, a school for wayward boys run by Brother John, who is a firm believer in strong discipline.

A difficult film to watch; it's not "enjoyable" nor is it "entertainment" (if you think it is either of these, I don't want to know you). It is, however, cathartic. The true story had to be told and should be seen - to leave it untold would have done a disservice to all those affected. It will (hopefully) leave you shocked. It pulls no punches and contains scenes that range from depressing to unspeakable.
