Smiles of a Summer Night (1955)

Early in the 20th century, middle-aged lawyer Fredrik Egerman and his young wife, Anne, have still not consummated their marriage, while Fredrik's son finds himself increasingly attracted to his new stepmother. To make matters worse, Fredrik's old flame Desiree makes a public bet that she can seduce him at a romantic weekend retreat where four couples convene, swapping partners and pairing off in unexpected ways.

I love the duality, contrasts and visual contradictions, much like Renoir's Rules of the Game, this is so rich with drama and beautifully intertwined character archs and story plots.

This film served as the basis for the Stephen Sondheim musical "A Little Night Music". It is simply a delightfully breezy comedy about love and infidelity amongst a group of high-class Swedes during the turn of the century. Light and funny but still managed to be distinctly Bergman. Great performances by a fine ensemble of actors.
