Smiles of a Summer Night (1955)

Early in the 20th century, middle-aged lawyer Fredrik Egerman and his young wife, Anne, have still not consummated their marriage, while Fredrik's son finds himself increasingly attracted to his new stepmother. To make matters worse, Fredrik's old flame Desiree makes a public bet that she can seduce him at a romantic weekend retreat where four couples convene, swapping partners and pairing off in unexpected ways.

I was surprised by how much I loved this Ingmar Bergman film, I found it highly enjoyable. I don't think I'd seen a comedy from him, it was a nice change and he's really adept at it. It's a fun story, that despite being set in the early 1900's and released in 1955, still felt modern to me. I can definitely see myself revisiting this film. Highly recommended!

One of Bergman's better films. This movie doesn't suffer from tedious, boredom like Bergman's lesser films. Wonderfully directed movie with a extremely interesting story.

Another outstanding Bergman film, one that is a departure of most his traits but still retains a few jabs at religion and his mastery of the craft. Amazing cinematography and beautifully filmed in striking black and white, the film is a wonderful atmosphere to be immersed in for the 109 minute runtime. Teeming to the brim with sexual energy and tension the film sucks you in and you are so focused on the multiple characters and their various relationships you are constantly following each and every word. Before you know things get very serious from the earlier more lighthearted pieces of the film and makes this work not only as a great comedy but a great classic drama piece at the same time. Highly Highly Recommended! If you are more conservative and most Bergman films turn you off, this is a great one to enjoy given a mature audience.

I caught this on my self-imposed Bergman marathon and was quite delighted. So, it appears that dramatic rom-coms CAN be thoughtful, creative, poetic, introspective and deep while being whimsy, light, sexy, flirty and silly. Only a master like Bergman could master such characters with their inter-weaving liasons and create a masterpiece.

If you think Bergman is just cold and depressing, you should see this. Warm, beautifully acted and funny, this is one of his finest films. Both sad and charming, it rests in your memory long after viewing it.
