Early in the 20th century, middle-aged lawyer Fredrik Egerman and his young wife, Anne, have still not consummated their marriage, while Fredrik's son finds himself increasingly attracted to his new stepmother. To make matters worse, Fredrik's old flame Desiree makes a public bet that she can seduce him at a romantic weekend retreat where four couples convene, swapping partners and pairing off in unexpected ways.

I am by no means another Leonard Maltin here, but this film is a masterpiece. The acting isn't that great, the script is very Bergman-esque with the usual philosophical-trajectories, but at least the film does what EVERY film should do - teach us a lesson on values. In essence, we as people should only be selfish about 2 things - love whomever we please, and howevermany we please. Also, the sedating shots of Sweden's summer nights have an incredible effect on the mood which is anti-depressing. But seriously, see this if you want to laugh and cry all in one take.

A romantic comedy by Ingmar Bergman, in which four couples find love of various forms by the end, despite the fact that, as one character puts it, "Love is loathsome."

Another outstanding Bergman film, one that is a departure of most his traits but still retains a few jabs at religion and his mastery of the craft. Amazing cinematography and beautifully filmed in striking black and white, the film is a wonderful atmosphere to be immersed in for the 109 minute runtime. Teeming to the brim with sexual energy and tension the film sucks you in and you are so focused on the multiple characters and their various relationships you are constantly following each and every word. Before you know things get very serious from the earlier more lighthearted pieces of the film and makes this work not only as a great comedy but a great classic drama piece at the same time. Highly Highly Recommended! If you are more conservative and most Bergman films turn you off, this is a great one to enjoy given a mature audience.
