Singapore Dreaming (2006)

Disappointed by his failed dreams, Loh Poh Huat visits his frustrations on his family. So when he wins the lottery, everyone believes the money will deliver them from their struggles. However, Loh dies abruptly and his elaborate and surreal Taoist funeral pitches the family into a battle where the stakes are the very meaning of life itself. Singapore Dreaming is a poignant yet darkly humorous story which follows the lives of six individuals as they navigate the rapidly changing conditions experienced in today's modern South-East Asian cities.

I bought this on VCD. I just grabbed any Singaporean movie with a decent looking story-line outlined on the box. I thought this was going to be a comedy, but turned out to more like a drama. A bit depressing!

Very realistic to the life of Singaporeans. Probably the best Singaporean movie I have seen (if that means anything to you!)

After all that hype about it being THE film that all Singaporeans should watch, SINGAPORE DREAMING is just another letdown. The film seems to tend towards Realism--a depiction of the Singaporean way of life rather than a commentary per se. It was not as depressing as other viewers made it out to be unlike Khoo's 12 STOREYS. In the end, it had (not again!) a feel-good ending, with the bad getting what they deserved and the hard-working finally getting what they should. What's so ground-breaking about that?
