Silk Stockings (1957)

After three bumbling Soviet agents fail in their mission to retrieve a straying Soviet composer from Paris, the beautiful, ultra-serious Ninotchka is sent to complete their mission and to retrieve them. She starts out condemning the decadent West, but gradually falls under its spell—with the help of an American movie producer. A remake of Ninotchka (1939).

Cole Porter's music is unbeatable! And the "transformation" of Cyd Charisse - beautiful! Very good choreos all through, though. And Fred...well, he'll always be remembered anyway. :-)

Delightful and very charming musical version of Ninotchka starring the always great Fred Astaire and the very sexy Cyd Charisse. Sure, the film was released during the whole Red Scare, so it had some obvious elements of communism bad, freedom good, but itâ??s not really distracting. There are great musical numbers, including the very fun Stereophonic Sound and the awesome Ritz Roll and Rock showing off Astaireâ??s always incredible dance moves. Just an overall fun and entertaining film from start to finish thatâ??s easy to watch and flies by.

Why hire the best legs in the biz if you're going to cover them in dowdy Soviet outfits for 110 minutes? Cyd Charisse's assets are wasted, while she lacks the acting chops to make this work. Some witty Cole Porter songs, though, and Janis Page steals all her scenes.

Half as funny as the original, but it seems they had to sacrifice something to make some of the musical numbers work. Astaire is certainly aging - you can tell be how much of the dance bits he spends stretching out on the floor. Charisse is fantastic when she finally dances. A shame that Lorre's funnies bit is his dance, as he could be hilarious in other films. The best lines from the original are preserved, but seem to have been lost in the timing. Still, there are a few moments in the dance scenes that are worth watching.

Cole Porter's Broadway hit musical adaptation of Ninotchka was transferred to the screen by MGM and director Rouben Mamoulian with the emphasis on dance, and with Astaire & Charisse as the stars, the change works quite well; Janis Paige almost steals the show as a former swimming star a la Esther Williams, and her number "Satin & Silk" is a pure delight; other musical highlights include Cyd's ballet to "Silk Stockings," Astaire and Paige's "Stereophonic Sound," and Astaire and Charisse's duet to "All of You."
