Kind of like 400 Blows in the post-war Italy, it is charming and tragic but a bit uneven.

It is filled, in every scene, with an awareness of the pitiful complexity of the causes of even simple evil.

A 'MUST-WATCH'. this film will only be an eye-opener to black and white appreciators.

The film's title is somewhat misleading, suggesting a tale of shoeshine boys scraping out a living in the streets. Actually, that's just the exposition -- at its core, this is a tragedy about two boys who bond via a horse, and then are divided by a reformatory. The score is too unsubtle at times, but the black and white cinematography is exquisite. The untrained young actors are quite affecting, and if you have a soft spot for crying children (and who doesn't?), grab some Kleenex beforehand.

De Sica's brand of Italian Neo-Realism hardly seems naturalistic these days with its well planned shots, scripted melodramatic action, and occasionally intrusive music. But viewed as an artistic creation rather than a glimpse at how Italy really was (which it may still capture through location shooting), Shoeshine still has the power to tug at the heartstrings. Here we see two young boys caught up in the poverty of the post-war period and thrown into a juvenile jail. It gets worse from there, as their loyalty is tested through a number of trials. Perhaps, in fact, it is all too much.
