In 1992, teenager Sandi Tan shot Singapore's first indie road movie with her enigmatic American mentor Georges – who then vanished with all the footage. Twenty years later, the 16mm film is recovered, sending Tan, now a novelist in Los Angeles, on a personal odyssey in search of Georges' vanishing footprints.

'Shirkers' is the fascinating tale of a movie that was made, lost, found without sound and brought to life with a look on how it was made and the process it took to find. As someone that has put money into a movie that never reached completion I can tell you you go through the stages of grief, but over time you become whole. The bizarre story about the man who helped 'Shirkers' get made over 20 years ago and then decided to abscond with the footage is one that you'll have to hear to believe. It's a documentary that is part character study, part mystery and part behind the scenes and together it makes for an entertaining look at what could have been, even if it wasn't much. We all like to see our work reach a finished product and this is the long-awaited and hard fought debut of filmmaker Sandi Tan. Final Score: 8.2/10

It’s a charming, wistful movie, and I trust Tan will not have to wait another 20 years to direct her next film.

A really interesting documentary, really unlike anything else out there. By the end, you feel the anger and frustration of what could have been for Sophie, Jasmine, and Sandi. Shirkers for sure would have been a cult classic, if not for the selflessness of George. I would have given it five stars if not for the focus on George an this background, he was incredibly creepy and I found him and the relationship he had with Sandi to be extremely uncomfortable, I felt that the documentary could have criticized him more and painted him less as an enigmatic mysterious ghost, rather than simply the fat creep he is. Sandi can also be extremely unlikeable at times, especially in the way she talks about her friends and her relationship with George. However,? she is obviously talented and her movie looked incredible.

What Tan has given us is an incredible, sui generis tribute to the international lingua franca of D.I.Y. cinempowerment. She’s also telling us the story of how one person stole a big part of her youth. This documentary is her stealing it back. Victory, finally, is hers.
