One of the most visionary and important films to come out of India in years - 'Ship of Theseus' is a treat for the eyes and mind. Through three stories featuring a blind photographer, a monk and a stock trader, director Anand Gandhi presides over an existential debate that is almost mathematical in its beauty. The first two stories are perfectly written, and manage to touch the mystical notes that some of the greatest arthouse films have in the past. The third arc is a little too earthy for this film, and while I understand that Gandhi was probably trying to ground his movie and keep accusations of pretentiousness at bay, it slightly dampens the intellectual momentum of the movie and lands it a few inches short of perfection.

If you abstain from intellectual cinema, avoid this cerebral masturbation. Indie Indian cinema finally comes of age with Ship of Theseus. Divided into three parts beautifully interconnected, SOT is a well written, well shot, and a well performed film. The second story in particular left a long lasting impact. The long-walking conversational single shots were just brilliant. But somehow I felt Gandhi took his own liberty with some really stretched scenes, he should rather have added some more conversations. Like the conversations between the monk and the boy, or the verbal fight by the visually impaired girl for a picture she clicked left a deep impact. And the last story is like a perfect dessert to a wonderful meal, it's more of a dark-humor infused satire. Overall, it's an excellent film, bt could have been even better with some more layers!

in the same genre as dhobi ghat. a bit boring in parts, but you come out of the theatre feeling good and applauding the movie. extremely natural performances from all actors.

It's rare to find an Indian film that leaves you with chain of thoughts that tug at theories of existence and your way of seeing life. Ship of Theseus does just that. Moreover, it provides enough fodder to debate on for months ahead. This is not an easy film to make and sell in a market that is hungry for brain dead entertainment. It will not be an exaggeration to state that director Anand Gandhi has reserved a place in history of Indian cinema by making this film. Finally a film that Indian cinema can be proud of...
