The beat-up poetry, soused look and bad habits of She's So Lovely are often dated. The showy bravado is not.

Harry Dean Stanton provides some much needed humour, but the film's celebratory attitude towards a dangerously wild love that defies logic and convention lacks depth and genuine insights.

I can't figure out if this was an offbeat, brilliant, quirky bit of black humor, or simply a total mess of a movie. There's certainly a lot of talent put to pretty good use here: Robin Wright Penn more than holds her own in every scene with Sean Penn, John Travolta, James Gandolfini, and Harry Dean Stanton -- and all of them are terrific. And you want to sympathize with her plight. But the film turns downright bizarre three-quarters of the way through -- like all of a sudden Quentin Tarantino took the reins from Nick Cassavettes. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but like I said, I'm just not sure if Nick meant for this to happen, or if he just lost control.

This is definitely one of those 'you either love it or hate it movies' (I'll refrain from saying you either are deep enough/intelligent enough a person to get it...or not...nope...won't say that)...but I happen to be a person on the loved it side...And sorry to another reviewer here...yes this most certainly IS a dark comedy..and the performances all the way around were nothing less than stellar. This could have been played a bit more subdued...and yes then it would have been a morbid drama...but it wasn't played that way - everyone was juuussttt a little over the top...lol..on purpose ...and done deliciously...and Harry Dean Stanton rules..Great movie - not for everyone - truly great movies not always are.
