Sebastiane (1976)

Rome, AD 303. Emperor Diocletian demotes his favourite, Sebastian, from captain of the palace guard to the rank of common soldier and banishes him to a remote coastal outpost where his fellow soldiers, weakened by their desires, turn to homosexual activities to satisfy their needs. Sebastian becomes the target of lust for the officer Severus, but repeatedly rejects the man's advances. Castigated for his Christian faith, he is tortured, humiliated and ultimately killed.

Derek Jarman looks at Sebastian and sees what Botticelli (and Perugino, Reni and Mishima) saw, the lambent space between spiritual and sexual longing

Sebastiane follows the persecution and martyrdom of St. Sebastian, but the film has little to do with Christianity or history. The film contains many layers of meaning, all of which are concerned with the nature of the relationship of homosexuality to the rest of society. The film is filled with moments of subtle and not so subtle homoeroticism, all of which climax with the murder of Sebastiane - an icon which has become associated with BDSM and homosexuality. This makes Jarman's choice of subject-matter readily apparent. The fact that the film is actually shot completely in Vulgar Latin instead of english adds to a slightly distancing historical realism which draws the audiance into Jarman's world. It is beautifully shot and Sebastiane's voiceover gives the feeling that one could almost be watching a Terrence Malick film.

Sex Gang Children wrote a great song with the same title and even used the image from the film of the martyrdom by arrows. However, the song's lyrics seem to have nothing in common with this soft core homo porn version of Saint Sebastian's life. This is not the best movie by Derek Jarman, it's not even all that artsy, but I really do like the execution by arrows scene, and although I'm not Catholic or christian in any way, Saint Sebastian is one of my favorite saints. Maybe because I'm such a big Mishima admirer?

It may be the most homoerotic film I've ever watched. Definitely worth checking out for some beautiful imagery and being filmed entirely in Latin.

Thirty years ago I can see this rocking a few worlds, but today it looks a little trashy and unintentionally camp. "Beau Travail" covers similar ground better IMO, but both suffer from several very dry sections.
