Sebastiane (1976)

Rome, AD 303. Emperor Diocletian demotes his favourite, Sebastian, from captain of the palace guard to the rank of common soldier and banishes him to a remote coastal outpost where his fellow soldiers, weakened by their desires, turn to homosexual activities to satisfy their needs. Sebastian becomes the target of lust for the officer Severus, but repeatedly rejects the man's advances. Castigated for his Christian faith, he is tortured, humiliated and ultimately killed.

Thirty years ago I can see this rocking a few worlds, but today it looks a little trashy and unintentionally camp. "Beau Travail" covers similar ground better IMO, but both suffer from several very dry sections.

In my book, Derek Jarman's most sexiest tale of love between "real" men.

I like pretending Sebastiane is a movie they showed the Roman army so they would learn the dangers of sexual harassment.

A bold film for the time it came out, but it seems like a pathetic excuse to explore the beauty of sweaty masculine forms as some cheap soft-core gay porn, with terrible acting from everyone (delivering their lines in a stiff Latin) and amateurishly photographed especially in the night scenes.
