It is 1595. Brutal wars have just ended in an uneasy peace between Protestant Sweden and Orthodox Russia. We focus on the spiritual defeats of two conquered Finnish brothers, one a hardened near-psychopathic war hero, the other a gentle scientist in an age with no use for such men. They find themselves in the swampy interior, demarcating the new border with a unit of sadistic Russians.

I'm very into Finland and I was so excited to see a Finnish film! I've never seen one before until this one. It's amazing. I study Finland all that I can and you truly have to know the history and customs of Finland to understand and appreciate this film or actually be Finnish. It was great to make it about the sacred traditional sauna and the two brothers denying the Finnish way of peace. You can never change your heritage.

A very well made blend of history, human drama and fright, "Sauna" is definitely one of those films you have to watch more than once to fully appreciate, and a new favourite of mine.

Quite weird, mystic story about guilt, regret and atonement put into the historical context. Not quite a solid one but full of good ideas in Tarkovskian spirit (reminds me somehow quite a lot Tarkovski's "Stalker" - just put into another context).

Dark, brooding, atmospheric, deliberately paced Finnish horror dealing w/ sin and guilt. Don't expect straight answers, but do expect an intriguing, thought-provoking film.

This is a thinking man's horror film. I found myself ruminating on its message and imagery even two days after viewing it. The climax is one such scene that requires thoughtful meditation. After much, I've concluded that the being depicted is a personified manifestation of Knut's lust but have also read an interpretation labeling the being as the Wrath of God incarnate. You decide. If you're tired of conventional horror insulting your intelligence, check out Sauna.
