It is 1595. Brutal wars have just ended in an uneasy peace between Protestant Sweden and Orthodox Russia. We focus on the spiritual defeats of two conquered Finnish brothers, one a hardened near-psychopathic war hero, the other a gentle scientist in an age with no use for such men. They find themselves in the swampy interior, demarcating the new border with a unit of sadistic Russians.

Atmospheric and eerie. Shame about the abrupt ending.

Memorable imagery and excellent performances from the two leads. There are several moments in the film that aggressively alludes to the fact that more is going on than the audience is seeing, and unfortunately the film does not find a satisfactory conclusion.

Slow paced horror-ish flick centering on sins and guilt. Despite the easily received confusion around many aspects of the story (especially when the weirdness starts kicking in full throttle) the whole thing oozes with atmosphere and emotion. Great movie, just wish it wasn't so open ended, seemed like it had a message but just couldn't portray it.

Eerie movie is spoken in more Finnish than Russian. Creepy-interesting storyline and great cinematography..."Sin and guilt pursue the expedition...the title reveals its awful purpose in a stunning, startling climax."
