Satantango (1994)

Inhabitants of a small village in Hungary deal with the effects of the fall of Communism. The town's source of revenue, a factory, has closed, and the locals, who include a doctor and three couples, await a cash payment offered in the wake of the shuttering. Irimias, a villager thought to be dead, returns and, unbeknownst to the locals, is a police informant. In a scheme, he persuades the villagers to form a commune with him.

I am a big Bela Tarr fan, and this seven and a half hour magnum opus is simply breathtaking in its luscious black and white images. It pulls you in right from the beginning. Some scenes were unecessarily long, I felt, unlike say, Lav Diaz's Evolution Of A Filipino Family where every scene needs to be of its length. But scenes like the murder of the cat and the extra-sized doctor spying on his neighbour are just amazing to see.

It may sound absurd to say that a seven-hour movie has hardly a wasted moment -- as famously insisted by Susan Sontag -- but Tarr's minimalism has maximum impact, especially when the film's satiric nature becomes more prominent in the final hour.

Being uniquely tardy and lengthy (7 hrs), it nevertheless brilliantly tells a story of the bitter-sweetness in collaborating ("dancing") with a "double agent" -- "Satan." A film that arouse my political, moral, and aesthetic thinking.
