Satantango (1994)

Inhabitants of a small village in Hungary deal with the effects of the fall of Communism. The town's source of revenue, a factory, has closed, and the locals, who include a doctor and three couples, await a cash payment offered in the wake of the shuttering. Irimias, a villager thought to be dead, returns and, unbeknownst to the locals, is a police informant. In a scheme, he persuades the villagers to form a commune with him.

This incredible 7 and a half hour film is as humanly dense as the work of Dostoyevsky. A genuine masterpiece, that's the only way to define it.

This is a masterpiece. That is all I can call it. Bela Tarr knows how to do it and does it perfectly. Watching this in one sitting is highly recommended, because a person really has to get in the zone, but once you're there, there's no getting out of it. Every single take is absolutely beautiful, and gives off such an aura of despair, decrepitude, and a sense of complete hopelessness. The shots themselves are set up in the most fascinating and mesmerizing way - if I could pick one adjective to describe the whole... experience, if you will, "mesmerizing" would be my word of choice. Living in this film for 7 and a half hours is something I am definitely going to do again. The art of the long take is something that you just have to give yourself over to, and it swallows you.

It's rare to see a movie like Satantango. To determine if this movie is for you simply ask yourself "does a 7 hour black and white Hungarian film sound appealing to me?" If yes then chances are , like me, you'll find yourself merciless emersed in a film that pushes film boundaries further than most will dream. It's not a movie for everyone. Those willing to commit to the marathon runtime however will probably lose themselves because time becomes mostly irrelevant in Bela Tarrs worlds. It's almost impossible to describe but it's bleak, beautifully weirdly funny and dreamlike in nature. I doubt I'll ever see another film like it.

Hell yes, I saw the entire thing projected on 35.

This film is 7.5 hours long. I call that epic. Ambitious and masterful. Tarr is present-day Wagner of the cinema. Absolutely captivating. Nothing else made in last 20 years can hope to equal to something like 'Satantango'. Watching it in a single day (as I did) is a true cinephile survival test. However, what can be compared with the pleasure of watching a bunch of cows in black'n'white hang out around dilapidated Hungarian village enframed by a single opening shot that lasts unbroken for about 20 minutes?
