At New Mexico's Empire Zinc mine, Mexican-American workers protest the unsafe work conditions and unequal wages compared to their Anglo counterparts. Ramon Quintero helps organize the strike, but he is shown to be a hypocrite by treating his pregnant wife, Esperanza, with a similar unfairness. When an injunction stops the men from protesting, however, the gender roles are reversed, and women find themselves on the picket lines while the men stay at home.

The making of this film and the struggle that it depicts are really, really important. Esperanza's character development is also really interesting from a feminist perspective. The acting, on the other hand, is terrible and the quality is not so good. But it's cool anyway.

A depiction of Mexican Americans' fight for equality in WASP America. While the meaning and the story are important, the acting is like the Italian Neo-Realism - nonprofessional acting and low budget. If you aren't a fan of that kind of acting then this movie doesn't work. Overall an interesting but a bit boring entertainment wise.

When long-time film critic Philip French of The Observor published a list in the summer of 2006 of 50 lost film classics Salt of the Earth was number one. In late 1947, the blacklist of "communist sympathizers" was initiated by the studios and no one on that list could be hired. A group of great artists on the no-hire list formed their own production company and in 1953 filmed the true story of a zinc miners strike in N.M. in 1950 which was extended by Mexican-American women hitting the picket lines after men were banned from striking. Everyone involved in filming including the crew was on the blacklist, or an activist. The film was only allowed access on 12 screens in the USA, as it was denounced by the FBI as sympathetic to socialism. The film, directed by Herbert Biberman - one of the Hollywood Ten - was not widely seen until the 1960's. It's a rare treat and apparently now out on DVD.

The only wholly blacklisted film in American cinema, financed, written, and filmed by the Hollywood Ten. An unbelievably progressive filmic attack on the status quo of the 1950's. Superb.
