Salt of the Earth (1954)

At New Mexico's Empire Zinc mine, Mexican-American workers protest the unsafe work conditions and unequal wages compared to their Anglo counterparts. Ramon Quintero helps organize the strike, but he is shown to be a hypocrite by treating his pregnant wife, Esperanza, with a similar unfairness. When an injunction stops the men from protesting, however, the gender roles are reversed, and women find themselves on the picket lines while the men stay at home.

A great movie by blacklisted Biberman, the lacking quality of good actors gets to me and the fact is that this movie belongs in the place where i saw it, classrooms, not cinemas. Still decent, and emotionally packed. C+

Most of the actors and actresses were non-professionals giving clunky readings, but the leads Rosaura Revueltas and Juan ChacÃ³n more than made up for it. I got choked up at a few parts, and cheered when the mass of picketing wives of miners pulled cops out of their charging cars and sent them packing.

A significant amount has been written regarding this film's erasure of the involvement of the women's auxiliary of the mine mill and smelter local it depicts in militant organizing prior to the 1951 Empire Zinc strike that is the subject of the film. The film de-emphasizes this longer history of women's leadership in the community in favor of what is a somewhat more conventional problematic narrative about gender and tradition in flux. But the combination of blacklisted hollywood communists and Mexican-American New Mexican trade unionists makes for a potent mixture, and the collaborative process of scripting and rescripting the film is also unique and worth a lot more attention than people tend to give it.

One of the first blacklisted American movies, and possibly the most American movie ever as it really touches on the questions of freedom and equality. This is a wonderful, passionate black-and-white movie. I don't recommend this to everyone, it is *extremely* bleeding-heart and long and slow-paced. For me, that's the ideal. For people not exactly like me, it could be much.

The only wholly blacklisted film in American cinema, financed, written, and filmed by the Hollywood Ten. An unbelievably progressive filmic attack on the status quo of the 1950's. Superb.
