The Salt of the Earth (2014)

During the last forty years, the photographer Sebastião Salgado has been travelling through the continents, in the footsteps of an ever-changing humanity. He has witnessed the major events of our recent history: international conflicts, starvations and exodus… He is now embarking on the discovery of pristine territories, of the wild fauna and flora, of grandiose landscapes: a huge photographic project which is a tribute to the planet's beauty. Salgado's life and work are revealed to us by his son, Juliano, who went with him during his last journeys, and by Wim Wenders, a photographer himself.

Salgado's photography is so powerful, his humanity and dedication inspiring. Wim Wenders captures the man and his work as well as the message they carry with a lightness of touch that lets them speak for themselves. I was so saddened and so deeply affected by the images and the stories behind them, yet came out with some hope for the future

Salgado proves an adept and compassionate storyteller, his training as an economist providing sociopolitical insight into the suffering (manmade rather than natural) that threatens to engulf his work.

The combination of talents and temperaments of two great artists makes for a work of such beauty and depth that is, indeed, breathtaking.

A movie from Wim Wenders about one of my favorite photographers was surely going to be a wild success. I loved every minute of it and now I feel compelled to quit everything and go take photos of underprivileged people around the world. I only hope that they have nice toilets and Apple products otherwise I'll pass. Sebastiao Salgado is as close as it gets to a role model for me. He's a man that quit a lucrative career as an economist and risked it all to become a magnificent photographer. Of course if I had that level of talent I would consider it too but the real world is cruel and evil. The documentary is powerful and beautiful. Some parts are hard to watch since the suffering and sadness are too great but there is also amazing beauty and great splendor. Much like Mr. Salgado, I believe the world is magnificent and while there is great tragedy, there is also great beauty and way too many incredible things that must be seen and captured for the rest of us to see. Superb beginning to end.
