Brilliantly shot, a bit propagandistic but forgivable under the circumstances. Actually, the presentation of the propaganda is one of the more interesting parts of the film. Killer script.

Not one of Hitchcock's most well known works but arguably my favourite and possibly better than North by Northwest, which had a similar narrative.

This film has quite a lot to offer, not least a performance by Priscilla Lane, who was not to be sure a very good actress, but whose presence on the screen always tickles me. Robert Cummings is wooden or staccato, but actually okay for the part. The film is enjoyable almost all the way through, and it has a quintessential Hitchcockian scene, one that sums him up: I mean the one that takes place among the carnie freaks. (The scene with the blind man has a strange similarity to one in Bride of Frankenstein.)

This film is not exactly what one might expect from Hitchcock. It takes a little time to warm to it, but then it takes on a surreal life of its own. I think Hitchcock was still discovering his talent when he made this. This is very much worth seeing.
