Jennifer Hudson gives an admirable performance in RESPECT. Highly entertaining and full of life, this is a beautiful biopic fit for the late Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.

When Jennifer Hudson is singing her heart out, not so much approximating Aretha’s voice as channeling her soul, the effect is transportive.

I expected more from this movie. Jennifer's and Marlon's performances felt forced. They didn't embody their roles and become their characters. My favorite part of was Jennifer's singing in church her voice sounded great just wish her and Marlon's acting was up to par. Because that would have made the movie better. I think the Genius series about Aretha did better job at telling her story in a more honest and compelling way it's just a shame Aretha's family wasn't apart of the series. I wish this movie was better especially since Aretha handpicked Jennifer to play her in her bio pic.

What Respect does have going for it is Jennifer Hudson and some stirring musical sequences. Just as these films have become loaded with cliches, the reviews have too often lazily argued that “[Lead Actor X] just about saves the day”. Well, here we are again.

There’s little in Respect that one couldn’t glean from a Wikipedia scan, and in terms of her work, time would be better-spent re-watching “Amazing Grace” or revisiting her albums.
