Repulsion (1965)

Beautiful young manicurist Carole suffers from androphobia (the pathological fear of interaction with men). When her sister and roommate, Helen, leaves their London flat to go on an Italian holiday with her married boyfriend, Carole withdraws into her apartment. She begins to experience frightful hallucinations, her fear gradually mutating into madness.

Roman Polanski's masterwork! A true milestone in the history of cinema and horror genre! There is no other movie that can describe the concept of madness so brilliantly. Magnificient cinematography, direction, and acting all around. Catherine Deneuve is a great choice for the beautiful and disturbed Carol role. There is no one out-of-place scene or detail, and everything leads the audience to the ending. And it gets very disturbing, so you may decide to stay away from this movie if you are scared of being alone at home after watching a horror movie! Repulsion is the first and the best movie of Polanski's "apartment" trilogy (the other two are Rosemary's Baby and the Tenant), and carries all the elements of master's cinematic genius. A masterpiece by every aspect!

Polanski is no stranger to specific detail and doesn't skip a single thing while depicting Catherine Deneuve's rapidly decreasing sanity. Claustrophobia, sexual repression, social anxiety, and male hatred are all carefully constructed to bring about mental destruction. It's so carefully put together in fact it's almost creepy.

Catherine Deneuve is beautiful and terrifying. A Polanski classic.
