Regular Lovers (2005)

1968 and 1969 in Paris: during and after the student and trade union revolt. François is 20, a poet, dodging military service. He takes to the barricades, but won't throw a Molotov cocktail at the police. He smokes opium and talks about revolution with his friend, Antoine, who has an inheritance and a flat where François can stay. François meets Lilie, a sculptor who works at a foundry to support herself. They fall in love. A year passes; François continues to write, talk, smoke, and be with Lilie. Opportunities come to Lilie: what will she and François do?

Garrel's latest, Regular Lovers, is a sublimely beautiful black-and-white 35mm epic.

Regular Lovers isn't a folly-of-youth story that aches with emotion, like Au Revoir, Les Enfants or The Squid And The Whale. It's drier, and simpler. You are there. Iris out.

There are two recent films you can see about youth in Paris circa May '68. One is by an aging auteur who's completely lost the plot and the other helmed by Philippe Garrel, who at one point dated Nico of The Velvet Underground. The choice is obvious. While both films feature Garrel's son Louis in prominent roles, Regular Lovers, make no mistake, is in a class of its own. The film's first hour is consumed by an extraordinary recreation of the Night of the Barricades while the final two thirds trace the downward trajectory of a band of disillusioned idealists.

I'm not very used to Philippe Garrel's style of directing & making films, but the style was very realist, felt almost as if it was a documentary. The silence and lack of dialogue was difficult to get accostumed to, but I suppose that's the whole idea of the film. The end made me cry helplessly.
