Regular Lovers (2005)

1968 and 1969 in Paris: during and after the student and trade union revolt. François is 20, a poet, dodging military service. He takes to the barricades, but won't throw a Molotov cocktail at the police. He smokes opium and talks about revolution with his friend, Antoine, who has an inheritance and a flat where François can stay. François meets Lilie, a sculptor who works at a foundry to support herself. They fall in love. A year passes; François continues to write, talk, smoke, and be with Lilie. Opportunities come to Lilie: what will she and François do?

Quite impressive and intimate recollection of the '68 protests and its aftermath on a group of young intellectuals and pseudoartists in Paris. Given that I knew nothing about the historical background of the film nor having seen The Dreamers I probably missed many details. The film is beautifully shot in high contrast, under-lit 4:3 ratio. It feels like a silent at times with its silent film transitions. Other than the first hour which depicts a particularly eerie protest and the main character's escape from the police, the film is like a series of vignettes of the youths' aimless bohemian lives. The film is effective at capturing a sense of disillusionment and aimlessness of those people.

Regular Lovers isn't a folly-of-youth story that aches with emotion, like Au Revoir, Les Enfants or The Squid And The Whale. It's drier, and simpler. You are there. Iris out.

Comparable to the work of some of my favorite directors, the style here weighs out more than the storytelling. This is definitely a visual work of genius, but for a three hour picture, it might have accomplished more if some scenes were diluted. Classified as art-house, its shot entirely in black and white and is convincingly retro for '05. When the characters are failed by the zeitgeist there is an abrupt transition in the content of the film, which didn't deter me from liking the film, it just made me more interested in the characters. I'm used to tedious films that progress like leisurely novels, but I would only recommend this to fans of French cinema of the 60's.
