Regular Lovers (2005)

1968 and 1969 in Paris: during and after the student and trade union revolt. François is 20, a poet, dodging military service. He takes to the barricades, but won't throw a Molotov cocktail at the police. He smokes opium and talks about revolution with his friend, Antoine, who has an inheritance and a flat where François can stay. François meets Lilie, a sculptor who works at a foundry to support herself. They fall in love. A year passes; François continues to write, talk, smoke, and be with Lilie. Opportunities come to Lilie: what will she and François do?

Okay. Lovely to look at. Kind of interesting. But three hours? Felt woozy at the end. Features KICK ASS KINKS song tho in one part that Wes Anderson just used in his new movie. Funny.

Philippe Garrel portrays May 1968 events, and its effects on a group of isolated intellectuals, in 3 exquisite hours. From his static shots, slow pace of events, and with a powerful cast, his dark masterpiece has emerged.

I like the contrasting B&W scenes and cinematography, but I don't see why the film needs to be 3hrs long, the story was loosely presented, I can't help falling asleep meanwhile...

Quite impressive and intimate recollection of the '68 protests and its aftermath on a group of young intellectuals and pseudoartists in Paris. Given that I knew nothing about the historical background of the film nor having seen The Dreamers I probably missed many details. The film is beautifully shot in high contrast, under-lit 4:3 ratio. It feels like a silent at times with its silent film transitions. Other than the first hour which depicts a particularly eerie protest and the main character's escape from the police, the film is like a series of vignettes of the youths' aimless bohemian lives. The film is effective at capturing a sense of disillusionment and aimlessness of those people.
