Red Beard (1965)

Aspiring to an easy job as personal physician to a wealthy family, Noboru Yasumoto is disappointed when his first post after medical school takes him to a small country clinic under the gruff doctor Red Beard. Yasumoto rebels in numerous ways, but Red Beard proves a wise and patient teacher. He gradually introduces his student to the unglamorous side of the profession, ultimately assigning him to care for a prostitute rescued from a local brothel.

Perhaps Toshiro Mifune's finest role, this film will draw you in like no other. Exploring duty, dedication, and the wish to do what is right for people and society, Red Beard speaks to conflicts that exist within all of us.

This three hour, deeply humanistic epic is one of Kurosawa's finest achievements. The film is about a young medical intern who is transferred, grudgingly, to a public clinic. The lack of prestige and money is at first insulting, and the young doctor tries everything in his power to be fired. Over the course of several months, however, he begins to learn from an older doctor what it means to be a healer. It is a testament to the goodness of humankind in a harsh world.

This is what it means, or at least what it should mean, to be a physician. Anyone who has thought about going into medicine should watch this movie, then re-examine just why they are going into the profession.

A fantastic study of not just poverty and sanity but humanity altogether. Several very moving stories interweave around the seemingly immovable Red Beard, a doctor played by the great Toshiro Mifune in perhaps his finest performance. Cruelty and compassion, lonliness and bonding, despair and hope can all be found in this uplifting drama, with a touch of the Kurosawaesque humour that none of his films would be quite complete without. It's rare that I watch a film that is so good that words cannot do it justice, and this is one of them. Watch it with care, because it's powerful enough to make you want to be a better person. All that, and one of the greatest action scenes of all time.

Perhaps my favorite of all Kurosawa movies. Deeply emotional but not sentimental.
