It's definitely not PC; it's not all that good either. However, it's Bogart, Astor & Greenstreet together, so it's not all that bad. Still, what does it say about US culture in 1942 that Keye Luke's Japanese-American character is thoroughly Americanized and likeable but turns out to be an unrepentant villain?

It is with noble intent to reassemble actors from a successful film like The Maltese Falcon, but in this case despite Bogart, Greenstreet, and Astor's usually fine performances the story itself is so convoluted it leaves the audience in "the wilderness of mirrors" trying to figure out just WTF is going on? Not to mention there is no chemistry between Bogart and Astor. She is not the most feminine of actresses. And trying to figure out who is who brings a bit of credence to the adage "some people all look the same". By the time it becomes clearer the entire experience is anti-climatic. Good luck with it and syonara.

This started off a little standard. But it had its perks, as well as a lightness to it. The reunion of sorts from "Maltese Falcon" however amused me. (They even had a similar Sam Spade scene where he looses a tail. Except without the self-satisfied smirk.) Overall, a little bit corny. But Bogart's pretty much his usual cool in it. "Mine's bigger." There were some fun parts to this film. At best it could be considered film-filler for both Huston, Bogart, and co.

Humphrey Bogart plays a disgraced Army artilleryman who winds up entwined in a plot by a ruthless entrepreneur (Sydney Greenstreet) to sabotage the Panama Canal on behalf of Imperial Japan; the script initially cited Pearl Harbor as the target, but the real-life attack to that area motivated Warner Brothers to quickly alter the movie's plot. Across The Pacific is disappointing by the standards of a Humphrey Bogart vehicle directed by John Huston, but it's still an above-average example of wartime propaganda thanks to its star's machismo, a charismatic turn from Mary Astor as the token love interest, some entertaining character acting from Greenstreet, and Japanese villains who avoid the pitfalls of jingoistic stereotype about as much as one could hope from a Hollywood film shot in 1942. This picture isn't quite as indispensable as its pedigree would imply, but it's still worth seeking out if one is already fond of its principle players.

Un año después del bombardeo a Pearl Harbor, John Huston dirige esta historia de espionaje que reúne a tres actores de "The Maltese Falcon": Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor y Sydney Greenstreet. Y aunque la película no cumple lo que el título promete, el gran talento actoral y los giros sorpresivos que culminan en un tercer acto lleno de acción, hacen de esta película de propaganda un espectáculo más que entretenido.
