Queen Kelly (1929)

In Kronberg, Ruritania, the planned wedding of Queen Regina and Prince Wolfram is disrupted when the prince falls in love with Patricia Kelly, a beautiful orphan at the convent. The prince kidnaps Patricia and takes her to the palace, but the queen drives her out. After a botched suicide attempt, Patricia unwillingly allows her scurrilous aunt to marry her off to a decrepit scoundrel. Undaunted, Wolfram follows Patricia to her new home in East Africa.

Unfortunately, huge chunks of this film are lost, but it has been partially restored using stills and screenplay excerpts. What remains is a very good Swanson vehicle.

It's really too bad this was never completed, because I think it would have really been great. I really enjoyed what was completed though, even though the prince is quite the stalker.

oh what could have been. von stroheim has yet another trunacted masterpiece. has he created anything that exists in full and as he intended? maybe its better that his mad genius was edited. anyway, the movie as it exists is maybe a 3 star deal but the movie+commentary+deleted footage is 4 stars at least

One can only imagine how good this would have been without huge chunks of film missing. Of what exists, von Stroheim's direction is quite striking. I's difficult to imagine this kind of film existing after Hays. Swanson is a bit miscast, yet she sells it remarkably, managing to evoke a range of emotions with simply her face and body. Perhaps more important from a historical standpoint, but seeing the restoration made me very interested in seeing more of the man's work.
