Right off the bat you don't need to say much more except: CAREY MULLIGAN! It's unbelievable how changeable, multifaceted and just really strong acting Carey Mulligan in Promising Young Woman. A performance that can only be overwhelmed with superlatives. A big movie theater. Short story snippet: Driven by a trauma from her past student days, the protagonist Cassie now leads a very extreme and also vengeful night life. The film itself is dramaturgically very well structured and staged and has cool remixes of well-known music in it. In between it has its lengths, but ends in a very strong finale. A really well done thriller worth seeing. 4/5 bars.

The grimly multitasking finale of Promising Young Woman feels both audacious and uncertain of itself, as Fennell tries to meld a cackle of delight and a blast of fury, with a lingering residue of anguish. It doesn’t all come together, though there’s an undeniable thrill in seeing it come apart.

The tone shifts radically from one moment to the next, and humor is a regular companion to mayhem, pain, even violence. That brings us to the wild and harrowing ending. It’s an ending that may not be expected — well, it’s definitely not expected — but Fennell has said it was the truest way to end a real story of female revenge, not a comic-book version.

Writer-director-producer Emerald Fennell (who is also an actor and plays Camilla Parker Bowles on “The Crown”) delivers a sensational first feature film with this well-crafted, bold, visually stunning and emotionally resonant gem.
