Primary (1960)

Primary is a documentary film about the primary elections between John F. Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey in 1960. Primary is the first documentary to use light equipment in order to follow their subjects in a more intimate filmmaking style. This unconventional way of filming created a new look for documentary films where the camera's lens was right in the middle of what ever drama was occurring. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in partnership with The Film Foundation in 1998.

What chance did H.H. Humphrey have, really?

Historical film from a cinematic perspective. The Maysles Brothers charted new territory with this film. A behind the scenes access direct cinema approach had never been seen before this film. Essential viewing for any aspiring filmmaker. 5 stars!

I really cannot understand how this is such a decorated film. I tried to pull something out of it, but, with bad sound quality, rough editing, mediocre camera movement, and a patchy if at all coherent storyline, it was simply a dismal and boring film.

no documentary has since captured the inside views of a Presidential campaign so naturally

Totally gripping, partly because of parallels to the the political races this year of course but you also really feel how new the cinema verite was and how no one had yet become so sophisticated about always being filmed and so there are so many wonderful unguarded moments.
