Not exceptional compared to many other Japanese war movies. You know the ending at the beginning, just keep waiting for it to happen.

Shindo's bucolic war melodrama paints a picture of suffering faced by the community, and women, in particular, as lives (and families) are sacrificed to the war effort. The dialogue between the widow and the serviceman was dramatic yet poignant, and probably reflects a lot of what was "politely" unsaid in japanese society. The triumph of hope and renewal amid utter devastation seemed almost a trite ending, but there are enough issues raised throughout the film to make it memorable. The local official brought in much needed hilarity to counter the sad tale.
