Possession (2002)

Maud Bailey, a brilliant English academic, is researching the life and work of poet Christabel La Motte. Roland Michell is an American scholar in London to study Randolph Henry Ash, now best-known for a collection of poems dedicated to his wife. I never compare movies and books if possible. The point of the movie is that it is "based on" the book, not that it is an exact replica of the book. Therefore, taking it for what it was, a love story with a fun treasure hunt mixed in, intrigue, betrayal, and some very interesting twists, I give it five stars for being an absolute delight to watch.

To the film's credit, the Victorian era is seen as sexier than our own.

Great performances in a really touching story - a detective-romantic-postmodern plot.

Robert Roten 17 Dec 2002

Both a detective story and a romance spiced with the intrigue of academic skullduggery and politics.

If you are looking for a very romantic movie, this is it. Probably one of the best I have seen in this genre.
