I liked "12:08," but I have to say this one is a letdown after reading the great reviews. The idea is great, but the documentary style was just dreadful most of the time. Funny at times, but it's still a bore.

I sat through this at the Hong Kong International Film Festival, in a room full of other cinema lovers, and whilst I think most of us enjoyed it there was definitely a bunch of people squirming in their seats during the frequent long scenes where the we joined the protagonist waiting for something to happen. Yet, it was worth it, with a lead actor who somehow had us instantly caring about and engaged with the main character in a way few Hollywood actors can (or are given the opportunity to). With no music, excepting in one scene where it plays a pivotal part in exploring the character's relationship with his wife, and much basic (generally naturalistic) use of sound and images, it reminded me of a great period of Hollywood movies some thirty five + years ago. A rewarding watch if you have an open mind towards movies.

I think this was my favorite film of last year.

It's a surprisingly compelling way to build a sense of encroaching dread, delving into a banal, deceptively featureless world where the slightest bureaucratic blip or slip could change someone's life forever.

A film about semiotics and futility. Not the best of the "Romanian New Wave" that I've seen, but definitely a good film. Like many of the films of the movement it is deliberately paced and darkly funny. It is less subtle than I've come to expect from the "New Wave" but no less effective.
