Pinky (1949)

Pinky, a light skinned black woman, returns to her grandmother's house in the South after graduating from a Northern nursing school. Pinky tells her grandmother that she has been "passing" for white while at school in the North. In addition, she has fallen in love with a young white doctor, who knows nothing about her black heritage.

Pinky was something like An Imitation of Life, but only she stopped denying her real self, an negro lady......yeah she make have lived as a white girl going to nursing shool while her black grandmother worked very hard washing and ironing clothes so she could be educated and have somewhat of a better life.....she didn'tdeny who she was....in the end........very good movie.....It's always good to be yourself.....And be proud of who you are and the skin that you're in......If somebody has a problem with it, too dam bad....

Another favorite. A young girl(Jeanne Crain)who is black but passed for white in order to have the best, comes back home to her grandmother and has her own carefully constructed world crashing down. I guess the lesson here is no matter where or how far you go, you just can't forget where you come from. plain and simple.

Pinky Johnson returns home to the southern US from training to be a nurse in the north. It is noted that Pinky is an African American woman who looks white, and while studying to be a nurse, she did not acknowledge her roots. She loathes the racism of the south and wants to escape, but her granny guilts her into caring for an older dying lady Pinky thoroughly dislikes. As time passes Pinky discovers that multiple guilt trips based on other's expectations for her will lead her to a state of spinster martyrdom. I was frustrated by the story, but Kazan knows how to direct and Crain, Barrymore and Waters were all deserving of their Oscarr nods.

very powerful film with very good performances given by ethel waters and ethel barrymore. jeanne crain also gives a good performance but i would have gone with someone else. gene tiereny maybe. but i think lena horne should've played pinky

Elia Kazan made several great films, and this one seems to get overlooked. That's a shame, because it's one of the most important films about race ever made. A scary snapshot of our past, if not a little overdramatic. Jeanne Crain is wonderful in the lead.
