Interesting storyline(s), must pay attention or you miss important details. I've seen it twice now & am impressed with Gary Merrill in the lead role. Bette Davis has a small but pivotal role in the film. A great cast!

Although overstated at times, this film provides a fascinating journey into human character through a unique story line and develops more as a novel than a movie. Its implausible premise doesn't impede viewer's insight into its complex characters.

An odd concoction by '40s-'50s auteur Jean Negulesco, starring a mostly stone-faced Gary Merrill (who looks like he lost his dog, but in fact has left his wife) as a plane crash survivor who contacts the families of three of the victims to share their loved ones' final moments. Merrill is fine, but the real reason to watch is the supporting cast: a young and beautiful Shelley Winters as a struggling actress, a nicely understated Beatrice Straight as the widow of a guilt-ridden doctor, and--in the final segment--a paralyzed and bedbound (yet reasonably effective) Bette Davis (!). Corny and melodramatic, with lots of flashbacks and awkward shifts in tone meant, no doubt, to elicit the audience's tears in one scene and laughs the next, and one of those obscure little films that almost certainly never made it to the top of anyone's must-see list. A pleasant enough way to spend ninety minutes, but that's all.

This is a good melodrama made up of 4 separate stories overlapped by lawyer Gary Merrill as the sole survivor of a plane crash. Each story has a flashback and my favourite is the humourous scene with Shelley Winters as told by the nasty mother-in-law. Bette Davis's turn as the bedridden wife of salesman Keenan Wynn is worth waiting for. Bette's hard earned lesson on true love makes a profound impact on the lawyer, and is the highlight of the film.

A nice movie with good actors and an interesting story about life, love, and friendship. I really recommend seeing it.
