Alison Steadman is divine as Beverly, the diabolical party host who overserves her guests liquor and blatantly hits on one of her guests husband while bossing her own husband around like a servant. This is like a British version of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? except more devastating. This is really hard to find, but I have a copy. It absolutely reaks of the 70's. I love the opening scene where Beverly is making her self a drink to Donna Summers 'Love to Love You, Baby'.

Absolutely epic. It's majorly dated now but still terrific, and Alison Steadman is fantastic - a career defining role, and a career defining piece for Leigh too. The characters are wonderful. It's a big shame TV never produces gems like this anymore.

A very original Mike Leigh directed TV drama adapted from his play. Although it's dated the characters here are terrific - especially Alison Steadman's maneating Beverly, who hosts a get together with her neighbours. What follows is fun and very tragic. A great watch.

I just find it hilarious in it's idiocy....the get together for hell...the Duvitski woamn is just amazing...
