A timeless romantic film noir which was ahead of its time and inspired many hollywood versions.

A story about a gangster, slowly being asphyxiated by the lifestyle he has chosen for himself. A very good film with another excellent performance by the great Jean Gabin.

A finely acted and shot film that helped set the bar for film noir and everything a perfect crime/drama should be. It's far easier to see how the work of Julien Duvivier had on the later french filmmakers such as Jean-Luc Godard with his dark sense of humor, his use of reframing and stylistic use of lighting. A truly groundbreaking phenomenon.

Gabin is marvelous as the confident yet restless Pépé, a cultured man equal parts elegance and edgy brutality at home in this urban jungle but restless to escape.
